Wood carving with iron studs and red canvas. Some damage commensurate with age. Circa mid 20th Century. Beautiful texture.

Ci Wara headdress of the Bamama peoples in Mali. The mythic figure ‘Ci Wara’ was half human and half antelope and was believed by the Bamama people to have introduced agriculture to their people.

The ritual dance would have a ‘male’ and female’ Ci wara, with the male representing the Sun, the Female the Earth, and long strands of raffia attached to the base of the headdress would represent water.

Circa mid 20th Century.
